The tango community in Kuala Lumpur is small but really warm and welcoming. I only danced one night there. It was a one-time special event in a small restaurant. I’m not sure if the regular KL milongas have a different feel, but this one was really nice. Everyone went out of their way to talk to me. As you would expect for a small tango community there were a number of inexperienced dancers, but there were also several who were very good.
At the end of the night the people asked where I was staying and insisted that they find someone to drive me back to my hotel. I tried to protest that it was literally a $4 Uber ride, but they wouldn’t have it. It turned out that the person who was closest to my hotel was my favorite dancer of the whole night! I will always have a soft place in my heart for the Kuala Lumpur tango community and the delightful people I met there.
